Gladys Louise, b: 3 April 1904, Blue Lake CA, bap: 2 October 1904, by Rev T Dermody, St Bernards RCCh, Eureka CA, sponsors: Robert Rousseau & Kate McCoy;.... worked as a "supporting actress" in the Hollywood "movies" during the late "silents" and "early "talkies" era; her stage/ film name was Jean Bary.
Her sister Peg (Billings) reports via her niece, Loreen (Eliason): "Saw my Aunt Peg yesterday. She said she did'nt think Gladys had made this particular film (Tangeled Trails, following) Of course we know that she did. I asked her how Aunt Gladys got to Hollywood and she replied, "on a bus". Aunt Peg is really dead pan. Anyway, apparently in those days a talent scout would come into an area and set up a play. Local aspiring actors would come and sign up for the play. Gladys was in the chorus line and she was selected to go on with the play to San Francisco. I asked Aunt Peg what Grandma and Granpa thought about that and she said she really did'nt know. That they did'nt talk about it but that she did'nt think they were very happy about it. She went on to San Fancisco on the train and then the play, or whatever it was, went onto Los Angeles and she went on with it and that was that. She was very young, just finished high school."
Futher from Loreen (Hamilton) .... "Aunt Gladys lived in Las Vegas. Her husband was a slot machine repairman and they were very much in love. I remember when they came to Eureka (CA) to visit my grandmother. Gladys was always so beautiful. She had the most beautiful eyes. Turquoise and hugh. I have a studio photo of her that I will reproduce as best I can and mail it to you. I have it framed and hanging on my wall. She had long blonde streaked hair and always wore a lot of Southwest jewelry. Her husband Bill had lots of hair. I remember that. He had premature grey hair and was very handsome."
At least one of her films, made in 1921, called "Tangled Trails" (aka Sands of Sacrifice) was produced by Neal Hart Productions & starred Neal Hart (also it included our Jean as "Mrs Hall") as a Northwest Mountie who sought out unscrupulous promoters who sold worthless mining stock. She , futher, worked for Lowe's Inc, Culver City CA, 1938. While working for Lowe's, she, then, resided at 840 South Hobart St Los Angeles CA..... Some of her other screen credits, according to "The Motion Picture Guide" were":
The Cock-Eyed World... Fanny (1929) Why Leave Home (1929)... Jackie Lilies of the Fields (1930)... Gertie Mothers Cry (1930)... Sadye Scarlet Pages (1930)... Carlotta Bright Lights (1931)... Violet Van Dam aka Adventures in Africa June Moon (1931) Diamond Jim (1935) Florida Special (1936) After The Thin Man (1936) (some available on video)
She is also noted in "WHO'S WHO'S HOLLYWOOD 1900-1976 by David Ragan" as one of the "LOST PLAYERS", that is one who is recognized as a legitimate actress but for which there is no "bio" available.
Purportedly she was instrumental in bringing Hollywood film stars Clark Gable & Carol Lombard together; also, she has reported that actress Jean Harlow had ermine toilet seats in her home.
Her marriage name was Jean or Gladys Jean Muir....lived as a housewife in Las Vegas NV for over 20 years with husband William V (Bill) Muir who, "adored her", was a slot machine mechanic (present where-abouts unknown, 2000).... they retired to 108 Wawona St, Pismo Beach CA....d: 28 September 1973 Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo Co, CA, age 69 years, terminal carcinomatosis, heavy smoker....interred from the Sunset Funeral Chapel in the Los Osos Memorial Park.... no known kids....
