d: 29 September 1994, Brighton MA; diebetes, esophageal cancer; interred St Joseph's RCCem, West Roxbury MA; his kids in eulogy said:

"Dad, here's what we've learned......You were deeply and profoundly devoted to our mother. You raised your highschool sweetheart onto a pedestal and in your eyes she never came down. While stationed with the Marines you wrote daily love letters and lived in anticipation of those sentimental journets to see her. When she traveled, you could not bear to be without her, so much so that you often traveled across country to meet her for a supprise rendezvous. At home, she was your Queen, and your love and affection for each other was open and honest. Your children watched you and by your example, we learned to love.

Your direction in life was to provide for your family. Despite often difficult economic times, you and your bride worked to raise eight children. You were able to meet the commitment with humble persistence. You educated yourself and pursued whatever path was necessary at the time to deliver the paycheck. You never complained or ever let on when times were difficult. By this example we learned that family is worth every sacrifice.

You were quiet and reserved. You were uncomfortable in the spotlight, though you were not afraid to speak up when appropriate. You understood your own abilities while working devotedly to meet your obligations. You never bragged or required acknowledgement for your hard work. You taught us to be humble and selfless.

You taught us by example to live our lives with quiet dignity and goodness, to respect one another and to be dedicated to the family as you were. We pray that we can deliver the same lessons to our children.

Though our lives have been a poor attempt to imitate the man, the greatest tribute we can give you is to live up to the model you have created for us. You have a true heroine in Barbsie, Dad, who honors you mirrorring your devotion to her. Mom never left your side during your illness. Today's other heros Rich, Mark, Susan, Bee, Pete, Joyce, Jan and the in-laws- Dee, Mike, Kathy, George, Peggy, and Gary. Rarely does afamily show the level of strength and concern for one another that your family has shown over the past several months.

Dad, now you have all of your good works to take with you. Indeed you should rest knowing that you have accomplished much more than most. There is no doubt that you have earned a special place in heaven because those spots are reserved for only the truly good men and women on our earth. You are

You and Mom maintained an open door policy at home and we were always confortasble bringing home our friends. You would often come home to find more than the eight you had bargained for. It was never a problem in your eyes. There we learned to be open and generous.

As a hands and knees father and grandfather, you joked and laughed and teased and supprised us. You instigated food fights, led us into playful battle against ourselves and Mom, woke us with the clammer of banging pots and pans and sang "America the Beautiful" in the bathroom. You wrestled, tickled and goosed us. You made us eat our peas. You saved the oyster of the turkey for the guest of honor. You taught us how to have fun.

You sought comfort in God and the Catholic Church. You delivered God's message to us by example, never trying to force our compliance. We learned to have faith.

You put on an apron and did the dishes. You painted the house. You remodeled the kitchen. You did the plumbing and the electricty. You took on every project, big or small. If you didn't know how to do it, you resdearched it until you could. we learned to be self reliant.

When a neighbor needed a tree taken down or a car shoveled out of the snow you were always there to help. Generous with your time, you never expected favors in return. From you we learned to be friendly and caring.

On behalf of our mother, my brothers and sisters, our spouses and the grandchildren, thank you family and friends for your support and the tribute you pay our Dad. In addition to your prayers, there is a way you can continue to honor our Dad by remembering that family love is the greatest love of all. Please bring that sentiment home with you today"

b: 23 January 1928, at home, 344 Market St, Brighton MA; when King George,V was ensconced on the throne of England & President Calvin Cooledge was situated in the White House, Washington DC, attended by Dr Spellman; >>>> according to brother John, "I was thought to be the last child, then Dan popped over the horizon"; according to sister Louise: born at home with Dr Spellman & midwife Mrs Dempsey in attendence, then placed in a basket on a heating radiator, it was mid-winter in Boston MA. On this particular day while the birthing event was in process, sister Mary & brother Tom were to spend the day at Rogers Park skating pond, a local city facility. Tom fell in the water & had to be drug home soaking wet, it was the middle of winter in Boston. Both sister Mary & father caught hell over the incident. >>>> bap 9 February 1928, St Columbkilles RCCh, Brighton MA, Celebrant: Rev GA Quinlan, Godparents: John & Norine Casey

Graduate BriHiSchool, once violated the school no smoking regulation & was duly "detentioned" for several hours, threatened with ouster >>>> served in the USArmy, sergeant, in the army of occupation, Japan, as a motor pool dispatcher (a clerk) during 1946-1947 >>>> BS/Northeastern Univ (GI bill), while attending their freshman orientation session we were continually lectured & it was emphasized on the need to frequently change ones "linens", little did I know, then, that the lecturer was referring to my underwear; he also gave the group that old "GI" "saw" that of the 3 people, that is, you & the party's on either side of you, only one of you would graduate with the original class; he was right, I was drafted into the USArmy after one year in school >>>> under Northeasterns work co-op plan, had work assignments (worked cheaply, father cautioned me about the prohibitions of wearing braces & chewing gum in the office) at FstNatlBankBos (a commercial bank) stuffing cancelled checks into sorting machines, Carter's Ink (a manufacturer of office supplies, father drove me to work daily, it was on the way to his Undertaking establishment in Boston's "West End") entering accounting transactions into the books i.e. debits on the window side, credits on the wall side & Dickey-Raymond, (a direct mail advertiseing company) more of the same >>>> attended, after Northeastern Univ, (working on a Masters): NYU, Hunter Col, Syracuse U, Duke U & NCSU >>>> early schooling was at the Bennett / Winship School where Ms Barry was the principal, nice old lady; 1st grade taught by a Ms Crowley, who proved to be a screamer/yell'er, slammed her wooden pointer all around to make her point (one would think it was a Catholic School); 2nd grade, tought by Ms Love, learned to read; under the Boston schools then multicutural policy, we would sing folk tunes for the Scots, English & Italians, but none for the Irish who comprised 75% of the local population; 3rd, taught by Ms Toomey, learned the math tables, her sister taught the "special " kids; 4th grade, Ms Sanderson taught us about the Civil(or a'civil) War; 5th, Ms Cronin introduced us to intensive reading, once chastised me for bringing a knife to school, but she did'nt tell the parents, I also overfed her pet fish which killed them, much to her chargrin; & 6th, Ms Murphy taught us history & geography; survived the 1938 hurricane quite well, although it blew away half of MA; then on to the Thomas A Edison Junior High School where Mr Gammon was principal (likable old guy) & where "Honey Fitz (JFK father-in-law), "Hum&Strum" & pals regailed us with entertaining Irish, current & political tunes; 7th grade was with Ms O'Connor, I'm not sure what she was teaching; 8th & 9th was with Mr Cleary who taught math & science, a good guy, the Pearl Harbor bombing/WWII start happened during during a Sunday afternoon (Boston) this year, 1941, & like all good Catholic kids, then, I was at the local cinima, the Egyption Theatre, cost: 10 cents; then on to BriHiSch which I do'nt remember too much about, I think it was largely a custodial operation; the Principal was Mr Joseph Leary whos claim to fame, other than his WW1 experience, was to change the name of the HS student publication from "The IMP" which was characterized by a cartoonish pixielike figure to "The Brighton Heights"; it seems the the title "The IMP" & its comical rendition was undignified>>>> employed with: AT&T/WE, (traveling auditor), lived in a cockroach ridden flat on the "west side" NYC, owned by a "gay" landlord, with Al Crawford, this was my first sojourn to NYC, after which I returned to Boston for a brochiectasis operation (partial lung removal), which resulted from a chronic bronchitis condition obtained from Bostons cold winters plus weak lungs (a doctor at BosCtyHosp once told me that I had an "old mans lung"), (later in life, 2001, had an e-coli infection, spent 2 days in the hospital), then on to GT&E/Sylvania, my 2nd sojourn into NYC, (accountant, traveling auditor), at this time moved, after a short stay in Flushing NY where sister Louise was dispatched by mother to inspect my living mode, passed inspection, then moved on to a more fashionable part of NYC's "upper east side" with Al Crawford (who subsequently married Phyllis) & Bob Crowley (who subsequently married Anne) at 50 E80th St, a 5 floor walk-up which meant that one only ascended/decended when absolutely necessary because of the stressful climb, less roach's & more cocktail parties, also lived in exotic Buffalo NY & Syracuse NY, sojourned in Mexico for a year or so working on Sylvania Company problems, managed to get back to NYC with my sanity & without the "tourista's", discovered that the key to avoiding the "tourista's" was to drink beer, not water >>>> completed by business career, it took 30 more years, with IBM, (finance, business management), lived in Scarsdale NY in a "rent controlled" apt ($100/mon w/garage) which I obtained by bribing the manager, married Evelyn Brigitta Rompza, whom I had met at a Berkshires resort, moved to Raleigh NC under the sponsorship of said IBM company worked there, built a home which Evelyn has modified to a point that it is unrecognizable from the original, but for the better. >>>> first job (1940) as a kid was working for brother Dick selling newspapers, earned 50 cents aweek >>>> attended the 1939 Worlds Fair in NYC where I witnessed a performance, with mother, of a Sally Rand fan dance, both with & without her fans >>>> once had dancing lessons at the Arthur Murray Dance Academy, they didnt stick very well >>>> once met Cardinal O'Connell, Boston's, then, Archbishop while tromping across his residential property enroute to a "camping" at Hammonds Woods; he was very affable & genuinely interested in our camping foray; I dident understand, then, why continually promenading clerics kneeled to kiss his ring >>>>resides Raleigh NC (since 1965) >>>> golf's: 23 handicap, Hole-In-One: 20 November 1998, 12th hole, 6 iron, at the Wildwood Golf Course, Raleigh NC, w: Evelyn Costello & Howard & Joan Buesing, after 40 years of trying >>>> pot's, mostly sculptural stuff >>>> works the family tree, as you can see >>>> retains old kitchen breadknife & shoebrush from the 344 Market St residence >>>> Sgt USArmy/Japan/WW2, army of occupation, Japan >>>> no kid's >>>> many cat's: Simon, Shuster, Tilly, Tilly II, Samantha, Semas, Molly, Abby/Spud (1998) & Elsa/Mutt (1998) >>>> no dog's
